From Austin Business Journal: Meet Duff Stewart, CEO of GSD&M

By Chad Swiatecki

Like any dedicated University of Texas graduate, Duff Stewart is an earnest and proud fan of Longhorns football. But if you really want to get the CEO of Austin advertising giant GSD&M talking about sports, think purple and gold.

Those are the colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA team Stewart has followed loyally since the early ’80s when he’d catch Friday night games on CBS with the Lakers frequently squaring off against the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.

He recalled being in the AT&T Center in San Antonio in 2004 to see Lakers guard Derek Fisher hit a last-second shot against the Spurs in the Western Conference finals that went on to be one of the most famous buzzer-beaters in recent history.

“My kids were in their Lakers attire and were getting some elbows after the game on our way out,” Stewart recalls. “I was smart and wore a black T-shirt.”

Stewart, who leads Austin’s largest advertising agency ranked by gross income according to the ABJ Book of Lists, is also a big admirer of the leadership skills of long-time Lakers coach Phil Jackson. He frequently references passages from Jackson’s books on how to build a winning team. Read the full article here.
