GSD&M helps raise voices and awareness for Alzheimer’s on International Women’s Day

Two-thirds of people living with the disease are women. Two-thirds of caregivers are women.

Women over 60 are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s than breast cancer.

This International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Maria Shriver’s Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) and GSD&M are bringing awareness to the fact that Alzheimer’s is a women’s issue.

Music is a powerful way for people to connect, and it ultimately inspired The AlzheimHer’s Chorus—a vocal group comprised of women from dementia-based choruses from around the country.

The campaign includes a PSA video featuring The AlzheimHer’s Chorus singing a medley of songs performed by female powerhouses…for female powerhouses! To connect women around the world to the chorus, GSD&M tapped into Facebook’s tool, Camera Effects, to create a first-of-its-kind karaoke experience.

Marianne Malina, president of GSD&M, had a personal draw to the project and led the mostly female team that created the campaign.

“This is a disease that stole my dad decades before his time. When we’re given the opportunity to use our gifts and talents to answer an unsolvable problem that we have a personal connection to, the work does not get more meaningful.” —Marianne Malina
