Austin Parks Foundation to receive proceeds of special edition t-shirt sales
GSD&M has designed a new logo to commemorate the City of Austin’s 175th birthday. Mayor Lee Leffingwell unveiled the logo with GSD&M CEO Duff Stewart and Executive Creative Director Jay Russell during a special press conference on Thursday, December 18th, at Austin City Hall.
“Austin is nearing its septaquintaquinquecentennial – or 175th anniversary – and we are proud to commemorate its past and look toward its future,” said Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell. “GSD&M has created a unique logo to help celebrate and raise awareness of this significant milestone.”
The logo features an outline of Texas that incorporates “Austin” along the northern border in a stylish font. It is also emblazoned with a large “175” banner and the date of Austin’s establishment to mark the historic birthday.
For this significant event, we wanted to create a timeless design that not only represents and celebrates Austin, but also represents the great state that we live in,” said Duff Stewart, CEO of GSD&M. “We are thrilled to take part in Austin’s 175th birthday and to create a lasting image for the community to enjoy.”
GSD&M will gift the new logo to the Austin Parks Foundation, a local nonprofit that develops and maintains parks, trails, and open spaces in Austin and Travis County. The Austin Parks Foundation will use the design on a special edition t-shirt series, with proceeds from sales going to help fund its mission. The special edition t-shirts will be available online at austinparks.org.
“Austin’s unique outdoor spaces help define it as a city, and we strive to preserve these for future generations to enjoy,” said Colin Wallis, the Executive Director of the Austin Parks Foundation. “We appreciate GSD&M’s thoughtful gift and look forward to using proceeds from these t-shirts to help us achieve our goal.”
The City of Austin’s 175th birthday officially occurs on December 27, 2014, but celebrations are already underway. Mayor Leffingwell held a ceremonial cake cutting in the City Hall atrium on Tuesday, December 9th, to kick off the month-long festivities. The Austin History Center is also hosting a special exhibit, “Austin 175: Cabins to Skyscrapers,” in honor of the special milestone. The exhibit is on display at the History Center until March 22, 2015.
