Big Star’s SXSW Show Turns Into Powerful Tribute to Alex Chilton

Just as everyone at the SXSW Music Festival was finding their groove Wednesday, news of the death of Alex Chilton hit. “Austin’s in shock about Alex,” read one of the countless social media memes. On Saturday, heartsick Big Star fans got to hear Chilton songs performed by a cast of guest musicians sitting in on the regularly scheduled Big Star showcase, held down by the remaining members of the band’s current incarnation, Jon Auer, Ken Stringfellow and Jody Stephens. Alex Chilton’s Life, Music Honored At SXSW

The late Alex Chilton was memorialized by colleagues, friends and admirers on Saturday at South By Southewest — with words and, most importantly, with music. Following a warmly reverent and nostalgic afternoon panel at the Austin Convention Center — with Big Star co-founders Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel, latter-day members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, original producer John Frye and others — Big Star’s scheduled showcase that night at Antone’s was turned into a kind of musical wake for Chilton, with numerous guests taking turns during the 80-minute show. But the performance was also preceded by more words. Read more here.

Top concerts 2010

As 2010 winds down, we’ve still got a bunch of potentially terrific shows to look forward to, including Ludacris at the Allstate Arena (Sunday), Elvis Costello at the Chicago Theatre (Monday) and the Hold Steady at Lincoln Hall (Dec. 30), plus a gaggle of New Year’s Eve shows that we’ll preview in future columns. SXSW review: Big Star-Alex Chilton tribute at Antone’s

Alex Chilton was everywhere at SXSW 2010, the fact that he died suddenly Wednesday notwithstanding: His passing was Topic A on the street, there was a panel about him and his peerless band, Big Star, Saturday at the Austin Convention Center and showcase bands made a point of playing Big Star out of venue PAs before they came on stage. A Tribute to Alex Chilton and Big Star [Antone’s; 12:30 a.m.]

Big Star leader Alex Chilton’s passing on Wednesday got this year’s SXSW off to an unsettling start. Considering the countless bands inspired by Chilton both directly and indirectly over the years, the singer-songwriter’s death loomed large over Austin all week. But even more heartbreaking was the fact that Chilton and the current incarnation of Big Star– featuring original drummer Jody Stephens, and power-pop lifers Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies (above)– was set to close out Saturday night with a set at Antone’s. Instead of canceling the gig altogether (which would’ve been entirely understandable), Stephens, Stringfellow, and Auer decided to pay tribute to their friend with a night of Big Star songs played by the trio along with a revolving door of special guests including 1970s Big Star member Andy Hummel, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, M. Ward, Evan Dando, Sondre Lerche, John Doe, the Watson Twins, Chuck Prophet, the dB’s Chris Stamey and Meat Puppets leader Curt Kirkwood. Read more here.
